Singer-songwriter-pianist-actress Alison Sudol is a multihyphenated talent: She creates softly wrenching music under the name A Fine Frenzy and has two TV shows coming out this fall ( Dig, a drama on USA, and Transparent, a new dark comedy that will stream on Amazon). We got the scoop on her career and life as a redhead.

What did you want to be when you grew up? 'Besides a princess and a ballerina and a firefighter and a vet, I think I wanted to be an artist.'

Describe your musical style: 'Heartbreak on tape.'

Your move into acting: 'I'm a big cinephile. Love, love, love films. The only thing that I wanted for Christmas a few years back was a projector. I turned my bedroom into a personal movie theater-it's so easy to not have a social life!-and I watched these performances wishing I could do something like that, too. I took classes for almost a year, did a few auditions, and now I've got the bug. It's all over.'

Favorite movie: 'There's a little crop of films. Annie Hall, which is perfect. Lost in Translation, Beginners, Amélie, and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.'

Craziest hair color: 'A very vivid red [for Dig]. Shooting in Israel, everybody had these beautiful honey-colored, long, tumbling, beach-swept locks out there. And then I was very, very pale with shocking red hair. I stood out like you would not believe. You could see my head from space. It started a lot of conversations.'

Favorite hair color: 'Dusty rose. You don't even realize it couldn't actually grow out of a human head, ever. I found this amazing colorist named Danny Moon in L.A., and he's just a painter.'

Biggest hair mistake: 'Whenever I was having a bad day, I'd cut my bangs. And I've had to stop that. There came a point when I was in Germany, and I asked the promoter for a pair of scissors. He gave me his nail scissors, which is just gross anyway, and I cut my bangs. They must have been a centimeter long.'

Hidden talents: 'All the things coming to mind aren't talents. I'm thinking, I'm really disorganized. I'm a terrible parallel parker. Those are not talents! Oh, I'm a very good baker. I make different cookies. And Hula-Hoops! I can Hula-Hoop and read a book at the same time. There we go. Two talents.'

Twitter or Instagram? 'Why would you choose? Twitstagram. Instatter. Both of them. You know what I do? I take pictures on Instagram, and I link to Twitter.'
