Edmonton isn't going to get a pedestrian-friendly LRT corridor on 104th Avenue without buying more land for sidewalks and boulevards, says a consultant brought in from Toronto to write the redevelopment plan for the Oliver Square area. The alternative, said Mark Reid with Urban Strategies, is to narrow the driving lanes and take out room normally reserved for bikes. The third option is to create narrow sidewalks with no trees or other amenities, a backward strategy when the city is trying to attract transit users.
