Police and residents rush to help in Blackheath hair salon fire
Police were first on the scene at a Blackheath hair salon blaze yesterday (July 10) as striking fire crews were delayed in arriving, it has been claimed.
The electrical lighting on the sign for Westcombe Hill's Go West salon caught fire.
According to one witness, police officers had to break down doors using battering rams to access to the flats above before fire fighters arrived.
Passers-by and people from neighbouring businesses also rushed to help, using fire extinguishers to try and stop the flames spreading to adjacent properties.
A spokeswoman for the London Fire Brigade said contingency crews arrived at 5.52pm and the fire was out in around an hour.
There were no injuries.
