Selesha Bailey-Douglas - My natural hair journey

GOING natural is a choice being embraced by more and more people, as women giving testimonials on sites like blackgirllonghair.com make the process seem easy and in vogue. The changeover does make activities like swimming easier, and many women have touted the health benefits to their scalp of stopping the chemical processing.

Selesha Bailey-Douglas says it was when she read a book in college that she decided to embrace her natural side.

'The book had a character, Amita, who grew up in a time where slave masters would shave the subjects' heads if they misbehaved. So looking at it, I said I had the benefit of growing my hair while others are afraid of having their hair cut off, so why not grow my natural hair and stop destroying it with chemicals?'

It has been four years since Bailey-Douglas transitioned.

While she said there were naysayers when she started, she said she was not daunted by their comments.

She said the change has also been cost-effective.

'I don't have to spend money going to the hairdresser frequently. And I don't need as many treatments as when I had relaxed hair,' Bailey-Douglas said.

She said her decision has also improved her self-confidence.

'I feel much better about myself. I feel free and more in tune with my afrocentric self.'

She explained that there are many styles available for naturals -- 'rope twists, twist outs, Bantu knots, corn rows, an Afro...'

For persons who may be toying with the thought of going natural, she advises: 'Do your research and be yourself. Love yourself, accept who you are and look at the pros and cons. When you make a positive change, that's the essence of life and it gives life more value.'

Selesha's transition

* She transitioned using braids and did not do the big chop.

* She used Purlene shampoo and conditioner as well as African Pride products during the transition.

* She treated her hair with the aloe vera plant and mayonnaise.

'People with natural hair are at an advantage because the hair is already strong. However, you should know your hair type. Try products and see if it makes the texture, strength, sheen, length and elasticity better, then stick to them.'

Good products for natural hair

* Have a protein treatment and use natural conditioners such as egg whites, mayonnaise, aloe vera and avocado-based products.

* Using natural oils like argan, castor, olive or coconut is also essential.

* Never forget your moisturiser and if you have trouble with dryness, try using a sealant with your oil-based products or an oil based moisturiser. Your hair is made of dead cells, so make it come alive.
