Prince William going bald

His wife may be known for her long lustrous locks, but the bald truth about Prince William is that by the age of 50 he will have lost most of his hair.

According to an expert, the 32-year-old royal's hair will be seriously thinning on top over the next 18 years.

But it's not just our future king who faces problems with male pattern baldness. His younger brother, Prince Harry, who turns 30 on September 15, is already showing the first signs of baldness on his crown.

The new graphics showing how the princes will look at 50 have been drawn up by hair transplant surgeon, Asim Shahmalak from the Crown Clinic in Manchester.

Dr Shahmalak, hair loss expert on the TV show Embarrassing Bodies, has based his predictions on the brothers' strong family baldness gene - their grandfather (Prince Philip), father (Prince Charles) and uncle (Prince Edward) are all bald.

They also have baldness on their mother's side: Princess Diana's father, the late Earl Spencer, had very thin hair.

Dr Shahmalak said that sons can also mimic the style of relatives' hair loss - losing hair in the same places.

The royals typically are left with a very thin covering on top from their 40s onwards. Both Prince Charles and Prince Philip have tried to cover up their hair loss by combing hair from the side of the scalp over their bald patch.

Statistics show that 50 per cent of men have started shedding their locks by the time they reach 50 - and an even greater number have some element of grey in their hair.

Increasing numbers of men are turning to hair transplants to prevent baldness. Robbie Williams recently had a hair transplant just prior to his 40th birthday after he started thinning around his temples.

And bookings at Crown Clinic have shot by 25 per cent over the last two years, thanks to the 'Wayne Rooney effect'. Rooney's two hair transplants prompted record numbers of men in their 20s to go under the knife to maintain a full head of hair.

Dr Shahmalak said: 'There is a strong baldness gene in the royal family which has very obviously been passed down to Prince William and is already affecting Prince Harry who is starting to show the first signs of thinning hair around his crown.

'The only long-term cure for baldness is a hair transplant. I fear that it is too late for Prince William, who has too large an area of baldness to cover.

'But if his hair loss accelerates, Prince Harry would really benefit from a hair transplant. He could look 10 years younger with the right procedure.'

Dr Shahmalak is famous for his work with celebrities. He has carried out two hair transplants on Doctor Christian Jessen, star of Embarrassing Bodies, who said he was delighted with the work.

Dr Jessen said: 'The new hair has really boosted my confidence. I find doing photo shoots much more bearable.'

The model Calum Best, 32, also had two hair transplants with Dr Shahmalak.
