I had a really rough day on Sunday. I was forced to be a hair model at Curls and Company in Chicago. Ugh.
I've had my hair cut at the salon before. They chose me to be a hair model because they were testing a new product with representatives from the line. Since I have tight curls that shrink after washing I was the perfect candidate for the product that claims to elongate tight curls. I dream of elongating my curls because my hair is actually quite long but it always looks short due to shrinkage.
As a hair model, I had to have my hair washed and treated with organic hair products while I drank coffee and read gossip magazines. THEN I had to sit and have my picture taken while everyone told me I had 'cute curls' and I was pretty. These horrible people referred to me as a model all afternoon and gave me samples of product to take home. All of this was for free. I know. It's a miracle I survived it.
As a card-carrying member of the Curly-Hair Society I get all tingly when I hear about a new product promising longer curls, more shine and detangling powers. I have tried more hair products than I care to remember. My cabinet is full of unused jugs and bottles of product I tried but didn't like. I envy women who can pop out of bed, run a comb through their hair and be on their merry way. Still, I have no interest in straightening my hair. Been there done that in high school and two years of college. The expense and trouble is worse than keeping up a curly style. Plus, I ain't gonna waste what God gave me, yo.
During my free styling I was thrilled to pick up some tips for handling curly hair. I share them with the Sisterhood of Curly Haired Girls. We should all meet for coffee and kvetch.
1) Use a paper towel or t-shirt to dry curly hair. This helps avoid frizziness and damage and you can use your husband's old t-shirts that you want him to throw away.2) Blow Dry at the roots with a converter to elongate the curl. This is a great way to get that extra inch or two in length that alludes us.3) Flax Seed is all the rage. Mentioned at least five times, flax seed can be used to treat curly hair on the second day of styling so you don't have to rewet the hair and start from the beginning. It's the closest we'll ever get to the get-up-and-go fantasy that alludes us.4) Use apple cider vinegar and baking soda to cleanse hair of product-build up. Who knew. I didn't.5) White women with curly hair have problems, too. I always assumed it was easier for Caucasian women because, ya know, the hair is always easier on the other side of the salon. It was like the UN in that salon. White women, black women, Latina...and other came together upon a common theme. Next up: World Hunger!
There is a science to curly hair. Women are passionate about finding solutions. It's take a village to tame a curly mane. We must harvest our tips and share them with each other in order to survive.
