Alex Brownsell, Bleach London's cofounder, has just finished building a loom for hair. 'I'm really into embroidered hair at the moment,' she says. 'Sort of like what kids get at the beach, but chic.' Hair tapestries might sound far-fetched, but so did purple hair on the red carpet before Brownsell came along. Her colorful takeover began in her mother's kitchen sink and quickly expanded to a stand-alone salon, Bleach London, and a future outpost in New York City. The 26-year-old counts Florence Welch, Lily Allen, Sky Ferreira, and M.I.A. as clients, and her influence can be seen everywhere from Glastonbury to the Golden Globes.
Can anyone go green or blue or pink, or do certain shades work better on certain people?
Remember when the Avon lady used to come round to see your mum and her friends, and she would do a chart for what colors suit your skin tone? The same still applies. Really deep brown eyes stand out with bleach-blond colors. Green eyes are nice with oranges and reds. Blues look brighter with pinks.

How do you add bright color to dark hair? Do you have to bleach it out first?
You can do microhighlights for a soft color reflection without looking as though you've done the whole head. Hair-color sprays, like Kryolan Dayglow Spray, look really good on dark hair. I like to draw horizontal stripes with Kevin.Murphy Color.Bug hair chalk and then brush them out.

What's the best way to prepare for an intense color session?
Before bleaching, try to go as long as possible without washing. This way your scalp can build up its natural defenses and create a barrier between your skin and the bleach.
You're not a big shampoo fan. What's the alternative?
Try swapping shampoo for a lightweight conditioner like Kevin.Murphy Angel.Rinse. This will prevent your hair from losing natural oils but still give you a freshly washed feeling. Then follow with another more hydrating conditioner or a mask.
What are you most excited about trendwise?
I'm inspired by natural hair at the moment. Dree Hemingway has amazing hair. Her color looks natural, but it's pumped up a bit. Plus, I always love full-on blond. It brings out your eyes and your eyebrows. Everything in your face looks bigger. On darker skin, blond looks amazing, and it also works on really pale tones. I think it suits most people.
