A comb for every hairstyle

Celebrity stylist and hair expert, Jawad Maphoto teaches us how to choose the right comb for your hair type

The DESTINY beauty team was shooting for an upcoming issue recently and it was intriguing to watch our hair and make-up person, Jawad Maphoto (hair guru and owner of Lajawi Beaute Café in Melville) setting up.

He had a wide selection of combs, and it dawned on me that I'd only ever used two types: an afro comb and a small-tooth comb.

Realising I had no idea how many different types of combs there were to choose from, I asked Jawad to shed some light on the matter.

How important is it to choose the right type of comb? It's very important as hairstyles differ and you need to use different combs for different styles.

Does the texture and length of my hair determine which comb to use? Yes. Because combing stresses hair you need different combs for different hair textures and lengths to lessen breakage.

How should I use my comb? You need to start at the roots, going gently down to the ends. Sectioning the hair makes this easier.

What type of comb should I use if I have an afro or relaxed hair? You need a gentle detangling cushion brush or a wide-tooth comb.

Do metal combs damage hair? And are plastic ones better? Not necessarily. Not being gentle when combing is what actually damages hair, as this causes breakage. So, whether you're using a metal or plastic comb, be gentle.

When should one use a brush instead of a comb and vice versa? You need to use a brush to take out any knots. After brushing you can apply either a conditioner or a moisturiser, and then gently comb the hair to enable the product to penetrate through the layers of your hair.

Should ethnic hair be combed every day? I wouldn't recommend combing daily as this can cause breakage. The less combing you do, the better. My suggestion is to opt for hairstyles that don't require combing.
