NATURAL HAIR VS TREATED HAIR
The hair makes up a very crucial part of every woman. It says a lot about who a woman is. Her beauty, social class, religious status etc. can be obvious just by the way her hair looks. That is why in a documentary written by Chris Rock titled Good Hair, Maya Angelou described the woman's hair as her glory. She knew a lot can be said by looking at a woman's hair. You don't judge a book by its cover but with a woman, you can guess who she is by the way she treats her hair.
However, hair has been a controversial topic with women especially with colored women. Because the black woman's hair texture is nappy and not straight, there is always the argument of if it is better to have a treated hair than keep it natural. Both natural and treated hair are beautiful, if well tended but like almost everything, they have their pros and cons.
TREATED HAIR
Treated hair or relaxed hair is very common amongst black women. Most women agree that relaxer has helped their coarse, kinky hair become silky and straighter. Relaxer helps to reconstruct the hair texture, making it stay straight even in harsh, unfavorable weather. Styling your hair is done with more ease and not so time consuming. Your hairstyles last longer when you have your hair relaxed, maintenance is no longer a bothersome issue even come rain or sun, your hair still looks good. With treated hair, you can manage your wild mane easily.
Scientifically, however, relaxer has proven to be very dangerous to the hair. According to hair care suits, relaxers irreversibly alter the natural pH balance and chemical breakdown of your hair, hereby weakening each strand. Chemical treatments cause hair breakage due to weak hair follicles and scalp irritation when they are not properly applied or adequately maintained.
NATURAL HAIR
When you consider the cons of having treated hair, keeping your hair natural will be a better choice. Staying natural, your hair is healthier and you don't have to worry about split ends. The natural look is more versatile; you can straighten it out with a hot comb or keep it curly. Even when you wash your hair and it shrinks, you can leave it that way making it look as if you have shorter hair, like afro. As time goes on, you can comb it out, twist it or style it. Another pro of not relaxing your hair is that it gives you a very unique look. It is not a wonder then why the natural hair is making a steady comeback. Women are embracing untreated hair so much these days, although it has its cons too.
You have to be prepared to take care of your hair because natural requires a lot of maintenance. A lot of work is always put into keeping the hair neat and shiny. The untreated hair may not do well in all kinds of weather. With rain and heat, hair may turn out looking very nappy and rough because curlier hair doesn't have as much moisture as treated hair. You have to be really dedicated to this kind of hair, if you don't want to end up looking unpresentable.
CONCLUSION
Whichever way you want to keep your hair, you have to be ready to maintain it properly so as to get the best off it. Either natural or treated, you have to be committed to keeping your hair neat and presentable always. To enjoy your hair type, do a proper study of how to take care of it. There are relaxers that do minimal damage to your scalp and hair. You can also get hair treatments that will help minimize the danger to your hair follicles. For natural hair, you can get natural relaxer that doesn't change your hair structure but makes it softer and easier to manage. Like for treated hair, there are hair products that will help you manage and maintain your hair with ease.
Love your hair as much as you love other parts of your body or more than; after all, it is your glory.
