A hair too far? American Apparel debuts pubic hair on mannequins

The American Apparel store on Houston St. added pubic hair under its plastic models' briefs, which they say is intended to express 'the rawness and realness of sexuality.'

Plastic mannequins just got a little more real.

A new window display at the American Apparel store on Houston St. is making heads swivel due to mannequins that sport pubic hair and nipples under the brand's sheer lingerie.

The hipster retailer Instagrammed a shot of the display Thursday afternoon with the caption 'Au natural is best but our lingerie is a close second. Stop by and get some V-day inspiration! #AAlingerie #AAlace #vday.'

Confused? It's all about the 'rawness and realness of sexuality,' a store associate told Huffington Post.

By way of elaboration, the company released the following statement to media outlets:

American Apparel is a company that celebrates natural beauty, and the Lower East Side Valentine's Day window continues that celebration. We created it to invite passerbys to explore the idea of what is 'sexy' and consider their comfort with the natural female form. This is the same idea behind our advertisements which avoid many of the photoshopped and airbrushed standards of the fashion industry. So far we have received positive feedback from those that have commented and we're looking forward to hearing more points of view.

While the Instagram shot has garnered more than 1,180 likes, many Twitter users aren't so convinced.

'Good to be disarming stereotypes, but AA? Not sure,' tweeted one observer. 'No word on when they'll have mannequins with realistic body types or fashion sense,' sniped another. The Los Angeles-based retailer has never been afraid to push the envelope, with mixed results. A call last summer for 'transexy' transgender models won approval for its inclusiveness, but the brand repeatedly draws criticism for its provocative ads featuring barely-clothed young women.
