First Sports Clips themed hair salon opens in Hawaii

The first of at least a dozen hair salons that give customers the opportunity to watch sports games while getting their hair cut opened in Waipahu in January, and the Hawaii franchise owner already has a second shop planned to open in Mililani this fall.

Sport Clips Haircuts is a sports-themed hair-care franchise with more than 1,100 locations across the Mainland. The opening of the Waipahu store marks the company's first in Hawaii.

Hawaii franchise owner Eddie Khan said he thought it was a unique opportunity that would do well in the Hawaii market. He owns other businesses in the Islands, including Hawaiian Sign and Design and Anago of Hawaii.

The Waipahu store is located at the Waipahu Town Center Shopping Center, and the Mililani store will open at the Town Center of Mililani. Khan said he expects to open at least 12 stores, with plans for as many as 20, across the Hawaiian Islands.

Khan said Sport Clips Haircuts appeals to the affordable luxury market.

'Men want to be pampered a little bit,' Khan said. 'Women have a lot of places to go. Men want to be a little bit pampered, but a lot of them don't want to pay high prices, so I call it affordable luxury.'

The haircuts range from $10 to $25 for adults, and are $15 for children and seniors. Sports Clips Haircuts offers women's haircuts, as well, but Khan said it does not offer coloring and flat ironing.

'Most women want coloring and flat ironing and the whole nine yards. We don't do that,' Khan said.

The store shows University of Hawaii games on its flat-screen televisions as well as professional sports games.
