Dow Corning launches silicone volumizing and repair hair care ingredient

Dow Corning has launched a microemulsion silicone-based hair care ingredient that is said to provide an unusual combination of both volumizing and repair for a range of formulations.

Called CE-1874, the Dow Corning development team worked around the issue that silicone-based ingredients, while being great for repair, shine and color protection, are also usually heavy, causing the hair to weigh down, making thinner hair limp and lifeless.

The launch of the ingredient falls in line with the growing trend for shampoo and conditioner manufacturers to launch products with lightweight claims, falling in line with consumer desire for a head of hair that appears fuller and more youthful.

According to Dow Corning only a handful of hair care manufacturers are currently able to make such claims in the marketing of shampoos and conditioners currently available in the US.

No compromise on volumizing!

'In the past, shampoo formulators often felt that they had to compromise hair volume to achieve the benefits of repair and protection,' said Feifei Lin, Americas marketing manager for Dow Corning's hair care market.

'We designed the new Dow CorningCE-1874 Microemulsion so that they no longer have to compromise. Now they can create shampoos that deliver more of the benefits consumers want.'

The ingredient is a water-dispersable microemulstion of silicone polyether that is said to delivery both lightness and a smooth texture, making it suitable for sulfate-free and clear shampoos targeting thinning, tired, dull and dry hair.

Being launched globally and China regulation compliant

While also being suitable for color-treated hair, it is said to add shine, while making hair easier to comb or brush following treatment.

Dow Corning says that its laboratory comparison studies showed that shampoo containing the recommended dose of the ingredient led to hair with increased volume, a healthier look and feel, and easier was also easier to manage, compared to a standard non-silicone shampoo.

As well as shampoos, the ingredient is also said to be highly suitable for clear moisturizing leave-in conditioners.

It will be launched worldwide, including the fast-growing China market, where it has proved fully compliant with the country's specific cosmetic regulations.
