How to get Colbie Caillat's Grammys hairstyle

It wasn't as noticeable from the front, but from the back you could tell that the topknot Colbie Caillat wore to complement her red Ezra Santos gown at the Grammy Awards on Sunday was created from an intricate, reverse braid.

The braid snaked up from the nape of her neck and wound into a messy topknot bun that her hairstylist, Torsten White, calls 'a messy, reverse-braided topknot.'

White dried the singer's damp hair with the T3 Featherweight Luxe 2i dryer and then straightened it with the SinglePass flat iron.

Next, he created a diagonal reverse-braid beginning at the nape of the neck, under the right ear, and continued to the top of the head where he then tied it off with a CyndiBands elastic hair tie.

Once the reverse-braid was tied, Torsten gathered the remaining loose hair and the braid together at the top of the head into a high ponytail using another elastic hair tie.

White wrapped the ponytail and braid into a messy topknot, secured it with bobby pins and finished with a light hair spray to keep the hair in place while still maintaining a 'messy' look.

It was a modern spin on a traditional topknot. If you try it at home, it may require an extra hand (if not a personal hairstylist) to help do an upside down French braid.
