How to Protect Your Hair Color (and Hide Visible Roots)

Want your dyed hair color to really last? The trick starts in the shower.

Sulfate-free cleansers and conditioners made for dyed hair can keep in color appreciably longer (we like L'Oréal Paris EverPure Color Care System Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner, $6 each, target.com).

Also smart if you're up for more steps: pre-shampoo treatments that help block fading (try Nexxus Color Assure Pre-Wash Primer, $18, at drugstores), and rinse-in products like John Frieda Colour Refreshing Gloss For Warm Reds and For Cool Reds ($13 each, at drugstores), which make the color left in your hair more vibrant.

How to hide visible roots: We're into powders to hide those-one great choice is Color Wow Root Cover Up in Platinum ($35, bloomingdales.com); it's waterproof, so you can even swim or sweat with it in.

Will you be trying any of these hair-color care tips? What other tips do you have?
