1. How long have you been Natural?
I have been natural for about four years, since March 2010.
2. Why did you become Natural?
I moved to a climate where the weather is extremely dry and my hair would not cooperate because it became dry and brittle. I had a perm in my hair at the time so I decided to grow that out and just straighten it only, thinking that would be better. Unfortunately, when the weather was damp or after I finished working out I needed to touch it up which was not a good thing to do too often. So I decided to let go and see what my hair would transform into after going completely natural. My sister was natural and her hair looked great so I hopeful as to what it may look like.
3. Was it a hard transition? How did you transition?
It was a hard transition because I like and still like straight hair. I love my curls better, but it was different than what I was used to. I was very self-conscience since the curls would not act right for the first six months to a year. Overall I transitioned from a perm, to straightening, which at that point I had a professional cut a lot of my hair since it was unhealthy; to wetting it and letting go. I would use the products my sister recommended and I had a lot of patience.
4. Did your age aid in your decision to go Natural?
Not at all. It was the climate that played a major part.
5. Does your age make it easier or harder to be Natural?
The one thing I can say my age aided in was my maturity level giving me the confidence to keep me on tract. f I were younger I probably would have given up early on.
6. Do you see many Older Naturals in your area? If so, what styles are they sporting?
Honestly, I mostly see the younger crowd with natural hair and they usually sport twists.
7. How do you primarily wear your Natural hair?
I usually co-wash it and let my curls air dry. I wear it out a lot.
8. Favorite products and/or product line?
I love Kinky Curly, Shea Moisture and recently Curls. I will never give them up as long as I can help it.
9. Any words of wisdom or encouragement for other Older Naturals already Natural or thinking about it?
If it's what you want to do then just do it, don't give up and have a lot of patience with your hair. Also, accept your hair for what it is and don't go in with a preconceived idea of how you want your hair to look. Love the beauty in you.
Yes, if some of you were wondering, this is my sister! I have been hounding her to do a feature for a LONG time so I'm really happy she took out the time to share. I have to thank her for sharing and I gotta say...I LOVE HER HAIR! Having her share is important to let others know that even sisters can have very different textures. Her curl pattern is much looser than mine and she doesn't have nearly as much shrinkage as I do. She also had to wait about a year for your true pattern to come into it's own. Patience is key and I'm glad she mentioned that.
Yes, she a new author and I couldn't be more proud. She's a Sci Fi writer for young adults and here is a description of the book.
A YA Scifi story filled with secrets, sarcasm and betrayal. Don't expect this to be your typical picture-book ending...
Connor Esquibel recently discovers she has the gift of invisibility, among other abilities. As in no one can see her. She has no idea how her life is about to change for the worse. She is 15 y/o, sarcastically funny, at least she thinks so, and doesn't always want to face reality.
Connor meets five other teens like her and they try to figure out why they are special but not everyone is so excited about finding the truth. Sensing they are in danger, she is determined to figure things out by any means necessary. She stumbles upon secrets and discovers people are not who they seem to be forcing her to grow up fast. Throughout this craziness, Connor and one of the boys, like her, gets close causing jealousy within the group. Then there is Ronin, a being who is young, smart, and ruthless. He is set on taking his revenge out on Connor yet she has no clue why. Dormaineg.com
A book excerpt can also be found at her website and It's a great read for yourself or for a young lover of sci fi. There is diversity in her characters and that is a plus along with the interesting story and Connor has been getting great reviews.
I am always looking for new features of women over 30 who want to share their journey. Check out my Contact page for information on how to become a feature.
