The fire damaged hair and beauty salon
A BLAZE broke out above an Elton hair salon after it is believed workmen with a blow torch accidentally set fire to the roof of a flat.
Bolton Road was shut on Sunday afternoon as firefighters tackled the blaze in the property above Michelle Mason hair-dressing and beauty salon.
Firefighters were called out at 1.25pm after workmen servicing the drains and guttering appeared to accidentally set fire to the roof of the building with a blowtorch.
Fire crews had to remove the roof tiles and pull burning insulation from the loft of the flat below.
The flat's tenants, 22-year-old Racheal Gibson and partner Ian Oakes, aged 26, were both at work when the blaze ripped through the roof into the loft above their ceiling.
The couple, who have lived in the rented property for about a month, have now had to move out temporarily after being left with no electricity and a boarded-up bedroom window.
Racheal, who was at work in the Turf Hotel in Wash Lane when she received a call from her landlord about the fire, said: 'We are so lucky the fire service got here when they did and that we were both at work, otherwise it doesn't bear thinking about what could have happened.'
Damage was also caused to the ceiling and lights in Michelle Mason hairdressers after an air conditioning unit in the salon caught fire. There was also water damage to the floor. The business was opened by 33-year-old Michelle Mason in September. She said: 'Luckily no one was in the salon at the time.
'It sounds like it could have been a lot worse if it were not for the speedy response of the fire service and the police. They saved my business from completely going up in flames.
'We are open for business as usual and this will not be affecting our trade.'
Michelle, who has been a hairdresser for 16 years, also took to Twitter to thank the firefighters, adding: 'Thank you to all who attended the fire above my shop. Without your fast response, my hopes and dreams would be ashes now.'
As a thank you, Michelle is now offering half-price haircuts to any firemen, with identification, who come to the salon in the run-up to Christmas.
