While some might have been too taken with her Jean Paul Gaultier couture gown to notice, Rihanna made a major beauty statement with her wrap-around hairstyle last night at the 2013 American Music Awards.
What many didn't realize (full disclosure, that includes us), is that she was sporting a doobie wrap, which is a popular technique used by black and Dominican woman to set their hair at night. Typically the 'do, much like hair set in rollers, doesn't see the light of day.
The singer originally hit the red carpet in plain bobby pins alone, but then added pearl and rhinestone encrusted pins to match the choker around her neck for her performance. Rihanna's decision to hit the stage with her unconventional coif got many people talking about the cultural significance of her move, while for others, it was just another way for her to push the envelope.
For us, her look has not only stoked our interest in the doobie wrap technique, but also as to whether RiRi might have just started a new trend - one that makes setting hair with bobby pins the main event instead of just a preparatory measure.
We've toyed with the idea before, as pins having been making waves on the runways for years, but on someone like Rihanna, who has fans hanging at her every Instagram, it might just be enough to get the masses to entertain the idea.
There's something inherently retro about exposed bobby pins, which are most often associated with the '20s, when women used them to keep their elaborate coifs in place. Here's some inspiration - both intentional and unintentional - of how one might go about adorning their hair with hair pins à la RiRi.
