Follow for: glitzy parties, glossy models
During his glitzy career as stylist and salon owner, it is ordinary folk for whom John Frieda has revolutionised hair care. His range of products, launched in the early 1990s, were developed with chemists to target specific problems, using the kind of recipes previously reserved for models on the sets of fashion shoots and celebrities set for the red carpet. Starting with Frizz-Ease, his products were sell-outs almost as soon as they launched, women were so taken by their effects. Subsequent ranges Sheer Blonde and Brilliant Brunette have made him a household name from the States to Scandinavia.
A third-generation stylist, he went to Harrow school but eschewed his family's plans to make him a doctor. Instead, his father sent him to train with Leonard, the most fashionable stylists of the 1960s, and soon he was working on the set of Harpers & Queen and for celebrities Diana Ross and Jackie O. In 1976, he opened a salon with Nicky Clarke and the Purdey cut he created for Joanna Lumley in the New Avengers gave him an early moment in the spotlight. Today, he owns salons in London, New York, LA and Barbados where he nurtures young stylists. In 2006, he told The Telegraph that it is hard work not ambition for riches which makes you wealthy: 'I say to young stylists, 'If you want to make money, give every client the best haircut they've ever had. Think about that, don't think about making money. A wonderful haircut is a great gift to give a person. Give quality and you'll be rewarded sufficiently for that.''
