Often used as a protective style to preserve newly straightened tresses, pop sensation RIHANNA made doobie wraps a super hot hair topic last night after sporting her wrap and pins on the red carpet of the American Music Awards.
A hairstyling technique often used in both African-American and Dominican based hair salons to add more body and smoothness to sleek hair, a 'doobie' is usually the last step in a hairstyle, or to secure hair during sleep. Which is why wearing doobie wraps in public as an actual hairstyle can often be considered taboo.
Created by first rolling damp hair with large rollers secured with clips and sitting under large hooded dryers, the doobie can require a lot of time, but is a better drying method than the use of harsh blow dryers.
With a head full of dry curls, hair is parted in the middle from the crown to the nape and then wrapped around the head in a circular motion. The wrap can then be secured with bobby pins. Normally the longer you keep in the doobie the more bounce and volume.
One maintains the volume and sleekne
While doobie wraps aren't usually the first hairstyle to red carpet of an awards show, RIHANNA found it fitting to jazz her doobie up with pearl encrusted bobby pins to match a pearl choker she wore to perform and accept the first AMA Icon Award.
