'20/20' anchor Elizabeth Vargas has been MIA on the air for weeks - and Confidenti@l has learned she's been in a well-respected rehab center seeking treatment for alcoholism.

'She's checked herself into a facility and she's getting treatment,' one insider close to Vargas tells us. 'She's been there for a few weeks and will be there for another few weeks.'

Vargas, who will return to her anchor perch behind the news desk when she is released and is feeling better, confirmed she is in a treatment center and gave the following statement exclusively to Confidenti@l:

'Like so many people, I am dealing with addiction. I realized I was becoming increasingly dependent on alcohol. And feel fortunate to have recognized it for the problem it was becoming. I am in treatment and am so thankful for the love and support of my family, friends and colleagues at ABC News. Like so many others, I will deal with this challenge a day at a time. If coming forward today gives one other person the courage to seek help, I'm grateful.'

When senior staff at the Disney-owned network began whispering about her whereabouts, they were told Vargas was on 'medical leave,' but many suspected she had been getting help for an alcohol problem and would be returning soon.

'We are proud of the steps Elizabeth has taken and are pulling for her recovery,' an ABC spokesman says. 'We look forward to having her back home at ABC News, where she has done so much distinguished work over the years. Elizabeth is a member of our family and we will support her in every way we can.'

The network had been planning a way for Vargas to publicly address her issues and were exploring the possibility of giving People magazine an exclusive interview and photo shoot for a future issue.

The 51-year-old former 'World News Tonight' anchor, married to singer-songwriter Marc Cohn, became extremely upset in the wake of the Newtown school shooting in Connecticut in December 2012. We're told that Vargas' co-workers all have been supporting her off-air.

The talented anchor has interviewed big names including Ellen DeGeneres, Monica Seles, Johnny Depp, Mick Jagger and Drew Barrymore, and has hosted many ABC News specials.

CUTTING-EDGE J.LAW It's official: The pixie cut is cool again. Jennifer Lawrence is the latest A-lister to chop off all her hair, following in the steps of Pamela Anderson, Jennifer Hudson and Kristin Chenoweth, all of whom got super-short 'dos this week. The 'Hunger Games' star posted a photo of the hair on Facebook while chatting with fans for the film trilogy's Global Fan Day on Wednesday. Knowing Lawrence, though, we wouldn't be surprised if it was a wig.

ALICIA'S PRICEY MIDTOWN TOUR Alicia Keys is so serious about Thursday's 'Keep a Child Alive Black Ball' benefit that she's making house calls. The 32-year-old Hell's Kitchen-born R&B superstar is well known for being hands-on with the children's health charity, which she serves as an ambassador. But Keys went an extra step Wednesday, visiting the offices of big-spending VIPs who will attend the Thursday fund-raiser at Hammerstein Ballroom. Spies in midtown spotted the 'Empire State of Mind' singer entering Trump Tower on Fifth Ave. and going to the 24th floor offices of hard-partying billionaire philanthropist Stewart Rahr, who sources say bought two tables at the event for $100,000 each. But an insider tells us that's money already in the bank, and Keys likely had the evening's fund-raising auction on her mind. 'Last year he was bidding against Jay Z, so who knows what he's going to do this year?' wondered a source close to the event. Keys and Rahr also were spotted heading upstairs to greet The Donald, though we're told Trump will miss the event on account of being in Moscow for this weekend's Miss Universe pageant.SEEN AND HEARD ...

CHER'S HARD TO FACE

It may be a 'Woman's World,' but every girl likes to look her best. That includes Cher, who left her home in Malibu, Calif., wearing a face mask on Tuesday. Even the most casual Cher fan can't help thinking of the entertainer's 1985 film 'Mask,' in which she played a protective mother to a son with a skull deformity. At 67, Cher's choice of topical skin care over plastic surgery is actually kind of refreshing!
