NUTLEY - The 77-year-old woman who was killed in an apparent hit-and-run over the weekend was a beloved great-grandmother, and a retired hair salon owner, according to reports about her life.
Ernesta Fernandez had eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, according to her obituary, posted on the S.W. Brown & Son Funeral Home's website. Fernandez, who emigrated to the U.S. from Cuba in 1969, was the owner and a hairdresser at Gina's Beauty Salon in Belleville until her retirement, the obituary said.
According to an NBC News report, she often volunteered to cut hair at local medical centers.
'(People) keep coming up to us, telling us what a great lady she was,' Fernandez's son, Al, told NBC.
Authorities offered a $5,000 reward yesterday for information leading to an arrest in the woman's death. She was found in the middle of Centre Street before noon Saturday.
Police initially said the woman was the victim of a hit-and-run involving a van. Police were seeking the public's help in locating a dark-colored Ford Econoline van that was seen leaving the area of the crash.
