A scalp care treatment has been launched that relies on an organic oil carrier to deliver the active ingredient fluocinolone acetonide, providing relief from symptoms often caused by harsh hair care products.
Derma-Smoothe/FS topical oil falls into the category of prescription cosmeceutical and can be used to treat irritated scalp conditions that are often caused by a combination of hair care treatments, such as perms and dyes or even shampoos.
Its manufacturers, Hill Dermaceuticals, claim that the inclusion of the active ingredient leads to alleviation of common conditions such as inflammation, itching and redness that are often seen when individuals use double hair care processes, such as coloring and highlighting or perming and highlighting.
Trials highlight efficacy and safety
Hill Dermaceuticals says that clinical trials it recently conducted demonstrate the product's efficacy as one of the best performing cosmeceutical scalp treatments on the market.
The company carried out clinical trials involving 162 subjects to determine both the safety and efficacy of the product, with the results showing highly positive results when used by hair stylists on their clients.
'I consider the product a cosmeceutical, which is a pharmaceutical and a cosmetic combined. This is because it is used for the scalp as a health care aid, while also being a hair-styling that complements salon services,' said Taneisa Grier, cosmetic chemist and developer of start-up brand TG Chemistry.
Fluocinolone acetonide
The finished product incorporates the ingredient fluocinolene acetonide, which is FDA approved and manufactured and marketed by Amneal Pharmaceuticals.
Flucoinolene is a corticosteroid and is used in a variety of dermatological applications as a means of reducing skin inflammation and providing relief from itching.
It is typically recommended at a 0.01 - 0.025 dosing strength and is included in a number of leading prescription dermalogical skin care treatments, including Flucort-N.
