Backstage Access: American Authors Talk Hair, Hashtags, and Playing the Bad ...

You probably know the American Authors from their chart-topping hit, 'Best Day of My Life.' (If you claim you haven't heard it, just turn on the TV-you'll recognize it in several commercials.) The Brooklyn-based band is finishing up a two-year American tour and will be back on the road in Europe soon. To say they're exhausted is an understatement, but the foursome isn't planning on slowing down. 'This is our dream come true,' lead singer Zac Barnett told Style.com. 'No complaints, as sick and tired as one can get.' Despite their truly insane show schedule, they found time to partner with Axe Hair for the music video of their new single, 'Luck,' which debuts today. We caught up with Barnett and bassist Dave Rublin backstage before their Times Square show last week to talk personal style, preshow routines, and the haircuts they wish they could forget.

Axe gave each of you a 'gel look' for your music video and show tonight. What do you think?

ZAC BARNETT: Working with Axe was very cool. Not only do they have great products, but it was really nice creatively that they just let us do what we want with our hair. But we all say Dave [Rublin] has the best hair. It's nice and straight, so what he really needs is that long, badass hair. We're always telling him to grow it out.

DAVE RUBLIN: My hair has evolved. For a while, I was changing it every four months, mostly because people always confuse me and the drummer [Matt Sanchez]. I've had the slicked-back Wall Street cut, the really big hair with one side shaved, and now I have both sides shaved back. The evolution took a long time, but Axe helped me get that look.

ZB: For a while he was really into cutting his hair short and spiking it up. He looked like a soccer player.

DR: It looked cool in European countries...

Are there any haircuts you regret?

DR: Oh, yeah. So many. [ laughs] We were in a hotel room once in Mexico, and that's when I got this undercut. Zac just pulled out the razor and went straight zeroes on me.

ZB: Yeah, I wanted to shave your head bald. You looked like an alien.

DR: But now I figured out how to style it, and it looks good.

Who takes the longest to get ready?

DR: I don't want to say names, but...[ cough] James Adam Shelley. I don't know what he does in there.

ZB: He is very specific with his hair. He needs to do one blow-dry with some product, then another blow-dry...it's a whole process with him. He needs it to be perfect.

DR: We're talking 30 to 45 minutes.

ZB: People always ask how long it takes me to do my hair because it's pretty tall. But it takes two minutes. Blow-dry, some Axe Hair product, done. I've got it down to a science. And Dave wakes up like this. Hashtag #wokeuplikethis.

DR: I just slick it back after the shower and let it dry.

Do fans stop you on the street now?

ZB: People do, depending on where we are. It's cool and very flattering. But this has started happening a bit more and it's the worst-people are figuring out what flights we're on and they wait for us in the baggage claim. I mean, after a flight, I'm not looking great. My hair's crazy. So that's really the only time when it's like, 'Ugh, this is not the right time to be taking pictures! I'm not ready, guys!' If I look terrible in your pictures, I apologize.

Are you guys into fashion?

ZB: I would love to get more into it. It's something I feel like I'm relatively conscious about. I'm not so into high-high fashion, but AllSaints is pretty much our main brand. It's all we wear. I also love the brand Kokon to Zai [also known as KTZ]. They're pretty big in the hip-hop scene. Criminal Damage is a cool U.K. brand, and there's a French brand I like called Black Caviar.

DR: Yeah, there are a lot of small boutiques in London's Shoreditch neighborhood that we found and really like.

Has anything crazy happened on tour lately?

ZB: Well, I had food poisoning yesterday. So that was the first time I've ever had to leave a show to throw up...mid-set, mid-song.

DR: I think it was the lobster rolls. You ate some bad lobster.

ZB: That was pretty funny. And on Halloween we did a show in my hometown of Minneapolis, and we dressed up as Batman villains. I was Two-Face. I wore these dress shoes that I'd never worn onstage, and at one point during the show I jumped down closer to the fans and I just completely slipped and ate it so hard. I got up really quick, though, so I don't think it was that bad...
