A Norwich salon has taken delivery of 200 worms and a wormery in a bid to reduce its waste and turn hair clippings into garden fertiliser.

Orb Organic Hair in Newmarket Street has taken delivery of 200 worms and a wormery in a bid to reduce its waste and turn hair clippings into garden fertiliser. Click on the icons on the image to learn more about UK garden worms.
Salon director and owner Kate Prutton said ever since the business opened in September 2008, she had strived to run an ethical and environmentally-friendly business.
She said: 'We use eco-friendly and cruelty-free products. Our towels are recyclable or disposable and we recycle everything we can, including the foils for our hair colours.
'I entered the Norwich eco awards this year and so I was trying to think of what we could do to go even further and I came up with the idea of recycling hair using a wormery.'
Miss Prutton, 42, added: 'I will also bring in some food for them from home, such as leftover vegetables, fruit and egg shells.'
While the wormery is currently in the salon, Miss Prutton has identified a nearby outdoor spot where it can be stored if it becomes odorous.
She added: 'The reason I'm doing it is to reduce what we put in our waste. It's also a way of getting very effective fertiliser that I can give away to my clients if they want it because I don't have a garden.
'Clients have been really interested in it. They think it's brilliant.'
Stylist Samantha Larkin is also planning a campaign to drum up new business which will see recycled paper packets of garden sunflower seeds, printed using vegetable-based inks, delivered to nearby homes. The hairdressers are now looking forward to being able to give customers updates on how the worms are faring. After all, it makes a change from talking about holidays.
