Men in North Korea 'ordered to copy Kim Jong

State-sanctioned guidelines introduced two weeks ago in Pyongyang spell out the requirements, according to local media.

One source told Radio Free Asia: 'Our leader's haircut is very particular, if you will.'

But they added: 'It doesn't always go with everyone since everyone has different face and head shapes.'

The Korea Times, which is published in South Korea, reported that North Koreans living in China dislike the style, referring to it as the 'Chinese smuggler haircut'.

But North Koreans who are reluctant to copy Kim Jong-un might be grateful the order was not given during the rule of late leader Kim Jong-il, who favoured a bouffant hairstyle to make him look taller.

Until recently, it is thought that North Koreans were only allowed to choose from 18 women's haircuts and 10 men's styles.

State TV has launched a campaign against long hair, which is considered un-Socialist.

In the wake of Kim Jong-il's death, it was claimed that North Koreans who refused to put on a public display of grief were sentenced to at least six months of hard labour.

Those who tried to leave the country or call relatives abroad were also disciplined.

It is also not permitted for women returning from abroad to be pregnant with a foreigner's baby.
