The Before And After Photos Of DIY Dyeing My Brown Hair Purple

We're all about hair transformations this past week. After months of procrastinating, I finally decided to dye my hair at home this past weekend. I've dyed my hair countless times at the salon, but this was my first foray into home hair color, save for the time I used a L'Oreal Feria Wild Ombré kit on the tips of my hair.

I didn't want to attempt anything too drastic, because I knew that would be a recipe for disaster, aka my hair turning orange. I also didn't want to just try a lighter or darker color than my natural one, because I've been there, done that. And I've also tried blonde and a touch of red. I wanted something a bit more crazy-colored, but keeping in mind, what I said about not wanting to do anything drastic, or with bleach, I chose Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Hair Color in London Lilac 3VR. I want to point out that the color on the website looks quite intense and vibrant, but when you see the box in real person, it's more subtle. It's more an an eggplant or merlot color. If you ignore the weird Oompa Loompa skin in this shot, this is pretty accurate to what the hair dye looks like:Thanks to everyone's helpful hair dye tips, the application went fairly smoothly. I put down an old sheet and changed into an old t-shirt that I am now using as my 'DIY hair dye top.' I read the full page of instructions and had done a patch test and strand test earlier. I did not want my new color to come with an allergic reaction, thank you very much.

For the application, I didn't use a brush, I applied the dye straight from the applicator bottle, which was the recommended method. I was foolishly worried that I was going to run out of dye and had a second box, just in case, but I only needed the one package.

I didn't rush the application. and made sure every single strand was covered. I also remembered half way through that I forgot to apply Vaseline around my hairline, so I added that mid-dye. It was a good thing too because I decided that it was better to get a bit of dye on my forehead, than to miss a spot. I managed to cover my arms and even my cheeks with dye, but luckily I didn't stain anything. I quickly removed any messes with rubbing alcohol. Here's a pic of my arms post-dye, pre-cleanup:

Sorry if it looks like a scene from a slasher film. The blurry camera doesn't help, but I was in a rush to get that stuff off. The hair color easily washed away and I'm pleased to say that I didn't stain my skin.

Once I finished applying the color, I wrapped up my hair in plastic wrap, and let it set for the 30 minutes that the box suggested. During the time, I cleaned up the mess I made then read. I had put a few books and magazines in the bathroom to keep my entertained, thanks to a great reader comment. Next time, I'm keeping a bottle of water with me, because I got really hot, and had to wander out to the kitchen to get a glass of water. I guess the stress of dyeing my hair made me sweaty.

When it came time to rinse of my hair, I did it in the sink, where I had laid a towel around the edges. Next time, I will probably just go straight in the shower, like I eventually did, because I foolishly stuck my head under the tap so the dye would run over my face. I felt like I waited forever for the water to run clear, and was convinced that I screwed up and that all the color had come out. After rinsing my hair, I applied the Hydrablock Color Preserving Conditioner the dye came with for two minutes before rinsing it out.

Now for the results...I should warn you that if you're expecting for a drastic transformation, take a look at Sam's awesome, new hair color. Mine is much more subtle. While there is a definite purple tinge in real life, it doesn't photograph that well in artificial light. Here's my after shot, in the same ghoulish light as the first photo...

If you just said, 'I don't see any difference,' I don't blame you, it's not a DRASTIC TRANSFORMATION.

Here is a photo of me outside in sunlight, where you can see the purple tones better. I apologize for the sunglasses, but I am a vampire and cannot handle the sun. Plus, the lenses help bring out the purple shade (which I didn't not plan).

Finally, here's a before-and-after collage, so you can get a better idea of the color:

Overall, I'm very happy with the color. It turned out exactly like the photo on the box. It is supposed to last up to 48 washes, so in a few weeks, I will post a photo to show what it looks like.

Overall, I would deem my DIY dye experience a success. I didn't destroy my bathroom and learned lots of great hair dyeing tricks. I am now up for being the at-home hair dye guinea pig, so if you have any suggestions for my next attempt, let me know.
