Neither haze nor rain nor heat nor gloom of humidity kept the faithful from the Will County Fair on Saturday.
The sky was overcast, there was 98 percent humidity, and big drops fell from the clouds. Carter Miller, 5, and his brother, Landen, 2, still made their way through the animal barns. Their parents brought them to the fair to see the animals, their mom said.
'We've been to (the) Lake County (fair) but we like this one better because it's smaller,' Tracie Miller said.
As the family walked through the goat shed, they saw the ribbons hanging over the heads of the winners.
Beef and sheep judging, meanwhile, took place Saturday.
Josh Lorenz prettied up his short horn plus steer for judging. As the animal waited in the chute for its turn on stage, the sweltering heat melted the cattle version of hair spray. Lorenz kept the steer standing in front of a large fan to cool off as he sprayed a black-colored adhesive on its rump.
Across the fairgrounds, another competition was underway. Youngsters pedaled in a kid-sized version of a tractor pull.
Grouped by weight, kids rode a red pedal tractor, pulling a sled filled with weight attached to a chain.
Dallas Behrends, of Clifton, pedaled all the way down the sidewalk to the finish line, a feat called a 'full pull.' That earned him a shiny new model tractor in a box nearly half his size.
