Whenever I interview a hairstylist (and I interview hairstylists a lot), 9 times out of ten their how-to starts with a handful mousse. 'Always, always, always start with mousse,' says hairstylist Frankie Foye who works with the Victoria's Secret Angels. 'It gives hair the hold and texture you need to create just about any style.' Here, five great options under $10-because you're going to be going through a lot of it soon. Trust.
For a Big, Voluminous Blowout: John Frieda Luxurious Volume Volume Building Mousse Shake the can-hard-until the mousse comes out light and fluffy (if you don't, it will be thick and milky and weigh down your hair, says hairstylist Chris McMillan). Work a baseball-sized mound through your roots and mid-lengths, then hit that area immediately with a blow dryer, lifting and scrunching the hair upward with your fingers. 'Otherwise, you run the risk of the mousse backfiring and drying flat against your head,' says New York City hairstylist Matt Fugate.
For Air-Drying Curls and Waves: Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Curl Mousse Don't just pick up any mousse to scrunch your curls (not all of them have all those shine-boosting, hair softening ingredients your curls need). This one has plenty-plus lavender extracts to smooth. Work a big handful of it through your hair from the ends upward, scrunching with both fingers for soft, non-sticky spirals.
For Beefing Up Your Braid: Aussie Opposites Attract Strong Hold + Touchable Feel For your biggest, fullest braid, work a generous handful or two of mousse from your roots all the way to your ends and rough-dry your hair with a blow dryer. It helps give the hair a bit of tack, so the layers will stick to each other and not out of your braid. Extra bonus: no annoying frizz.
For a bigger, better updo: Suave Professionals Volumizing Mousse Like braids, updos also need a little help in the hold department. If you work this from roots to ends and blow dry your hair with a roundbrush, you'll have the perfect height at the top of the head and crown (always flattering, says hairstylist Serge Normant) as well as a bit of hold to grip that bun, topknot, twist, whatever-cute-thing-you've-got-going-on-up-there.
For short, sexy styles: Garnier Fructis XXL Mousse Make no mistake, short hair looooves mousse. It gives hold and direction in a light, non-waxy way that really makes pomade jealous. Those with a pixie cut should go with a golf-ball sized dollop, bobs can handle a lemon-sized one. Work it from roots to ends and style as usual.
