A couple of months ago, I saw an absolutely heartbreaking video of a 7-year-old girl named Tiana Parker, who was being kicked out of school for having dreadlocks. The Deborah Brown Community School in Tulsa, Oklahoma considered dreadlocks a 'fad' hairstyle.
Then last week, I read an article about another girl named Vanessa Van Dyke, who was facing expulsion from Faith Christian Academy in Orlando for having natural hair that was considered a 'distraction.'
After both of these incidents, there were many articles, vlogs, and kind gestures that all supported these young girls in their battles with, what appeared to be, systemic racism. Every major news outlet that posted a story on these children had hundreds of Black folks, decrying prejudice and overt white privilege that puts young Black girls at a huge disadvantage with their peers from other races, simply because their follicles are naturally different. I completely co-signed everything that was said, but when I went to write my own article on both of these situations, my research took me to a place I never expected to go.
