It's official: Short crops like those of celebrities Jennifer Lawrence and Jennifer Hudson are 'the style of the year,' In Style magazine declared recently.
Actresses Anne Hathaway, Kristen Chenoweth and Pamela Anderson lopped off their locks. Model Coco Rocha too. Even Beyonce had a pixie for a minute this fall, before quickly reverting to the celebrity mean - long locks achieved through the best enhancements money can buy.
'I'm loving this trend towards short hair in Hollywood,' said Jonathan Hanousek, the stylist who cut Chenoweth's pixie. 'Women are sexy with short hair. It shows strong self-confidence. I also like the idea of women feeling a sense of freedom in breaking away from what had traditionally been considered sexy.'
If you're looking to lighten your load in the new year but fear a case of chopper's remorse, celebrity hairstylists have some resolve-boosting tips on short cuts.
1: Almost anyone can wear their hair short.
'You just need to adjust the cut so it plays up your best features and balances your face shape,' Hanousek said. 'Fuller faces look better with height on top and slimmer faces can handle more volume in the sides. Play up your eyes with a shorter fringe or cut your fringe mid cheek to feature your cheekbones like Kristin Chenoweth.'
2: Finer textures lend themselves to pixie cuts.
'But don't count yourself out if you have thick or coarse hair,' he said. 'There are so many great straightening treatments offered in salons that almost anyone can wear these styles with the help of a professional.'
3: Short crops are more versatile than most people realize.
'You can be all business during the day and then slick it back or pop it up into a faux hawk like Jaime Pressly for a night out on the town,' Hanousek said.
His secret weapons are Moroccanoil Frizz Control Spray ($17 for 1.7 ounces, moroccanoil.com), which adds the right amount of weight to Chenoweth and Pressly's hair without making it greasy. He also likes the medium hold of White Sands Undercover Styling Spray ($21 for 8.5 ounces, whitesandsproducts.com) and says it works on all hair types.
4: One reality check: Shorter does not necessarily mean easier.
'These cuts do require more maintenance than long layers. You'll need a trim at least every four weeks to maintain it,' Hanousek said. 'But some of the fun is actually growing it out. Every couple of weeks it evolves into something new. Some times you'll love, some times you won't.'

5: If a pixie is too drastic, the bob is also enjoying buzz. Jennifer Aniston and Julianne Hough are recent converts.
But Julien Farel, who owns a salon in New York City ( julienfarel.com) and has styled Ivanka Trump, Lauren Bush Lauren, Salma Hayek and Nicole Kidman, cites proof that short can have longevity.
'My favorite short hairstyle right now is Charlize Theron's textured crop,' Farel said. 'It's a coupe au bol that feels very Parisian-chic and nonchalant.'
And much sexier than the English term, bowl cut. But also riskier. If you tell your stylist you'd like a coup de boule, you're asking for a head-butt.
