On May 18 at 3:29 p.m., officers responded to the area of Harrison Street. A victim told police that a man was observed gratifying himself while exposing himself on the street. The suspect was described as white, in his mid- to late 20s, clean shaven with dark hair, possibly wearing a gray T-shirt. He drove a newer model black Jeep with a New Jersey license plate. The victim was on the phone and believes that the suspect fled the scene fearing police were on their way. Surrounding agencies were notified. A check of the area was negative for the vehicle.
Suspicious incident
On May 20 at 12:21 p.m., a suspicious incident was reported in the area of Highfield Lane. A man rang a doorbell. When the resident asked, 'Who is it?' he left the front door area, entered a black car with tinted windows, and drove westbound on Highfield. The suspect was described as a male, thin built with a beard, and wearing a hat, T-shirt and jeans. Information was disseminated to units on the road, and a check of the surrounding area proved negative.
Arrest
On May 18 at 12:28 a.m., police responded to a disturbance in the area of Summit Way. All suspects were checked for wants/warrants with Justin Alberto, 21, of Belleville, having a warrant out of Jersey City. He was arrested and transported to headquarters without incident. He posted and was released from police custody. The victims were advised of their right to sign a complaint with the Nutley Municipal Court if they felt they were harassed in any way, or if criminal mischief was done to their property.
Shoplifting
On May 19 at 10:13 a.m., a report of shoplifting was called into headquarters. Officers spoke with the manager of a Washington Avenue business who stated that they had a customer put items into their pockets and did not make an attempt to pay for them at the checkout. When confronted, the suspect stated that there were so many items that they put them into their pockets. The suspect also stated that they forgot they were in possession of items at the time of checkout and then offered to pay for them. The manager stated that it wasn't the first time an occurrence like this had taken place with the same patron. Pictures of the items were taken, and the manager was advised of their right to sign a complaint with the municipal court. The manager requested that the suspect be told that they were no longer welcome in the business.
Criminal mischief
On May 20 at 1:29 p.m., a Cadmus Street resident reported criminal mischief. The victim stated the rear glass window of their vehicle was broken after it was parked. The estimated amount of damages could not be determined at the time.
Property damage
On May 17 at 1:45 p.m., officers responded to Hillside Avenue on a report of possible property damage. The victim stated they had a white substance on their Camaro. Officers noticed white splatter all over the vehicle. The victim was advised of their right to file a complaint should the suspect become known.
On May 20 at 2:31 p.m., property damage was reported at a Washington Avenue business. The victim stated that their vehicle was damaged while it was coming out of the car wash. There was a small dent on the passenger-side door. The owner was not on the scene, and a sign at the business states that the company is not responsible for damage.
On May 21 at 2:05 p.m., officers responded to the area of Cambridge Heights on a report of property damage. The victim stated their vehicle was parked in their driveway, and they observed the passenger-side mirror was damaged. A construction crew from the complex was working on the victim's steps, which were in the area of the vehicle. It was unclear at the time if the construction crew was responsible for the damage.
On May 23 at 9:42 a.m., property damage was reported in the area of Howard Place. The victim said that their vehicle was damaged on the front driver's side fender while it was parked. The estimated amount to repair was not available at the time. It was unknown who may have caused the damage.
Theft
On May 23 at 3:23 p.m., the victim of theft reported the incident to police. It was stated that the victim's pocketbook was placed inside a Franklin Avenue eatery. When the victim went to retrieve their money, it was gone. Approximately $300 in cash was missing. The victim was advised that, if they ascertain a suspect's identity, to contact the Detective Bureau for further investigation.
Frauds
On May 20 at 4:12 p.m., headquarters received a walk-in report regarding a fraud. The victim stated they received a notice from GE Capital concerning a PayPal credit card they possessed. However, the victim has never opened a credit account with GE Capital for a PayPal. Thus far, they have received two bills in the mail totaling $611. The fraud department of GE Capital was investigating. The victim did not want to make an Identity Theft entry into NCIC at the time. The victim was advised they can obtain a copy of the report in three business days.
On May 22 at 4:54 p.m., headquarters received a walk-in report regarding a fraud. The victim stated that their bank card had been lost or stolen, and that it was being used by someone without their permission. The card had been used approximately five times for purchases totaling $238. The card was canceled, and the investigation was to continue.
