A Winfield woman was killed Friday morning when she was pinned beneath a sport-utility vehicle that crashed into a Jefferson Township beauty salon.
State police said Janet Huth, 67, was a customer sitting inside Scissor Heaven at 732 North Pike Road (Route 356) when a Subaru Forester crashed through the wall about 11:30 a.m.
Police said Carol Peters, 74, of Butler was arriving for a hair appointment when she drove from the gravel parking lot into the side of the building, crashing into what police described as a waiting area.
Huth was trapped under the SUV; she was declared dead at the scene.
Police said Peters' family took her to an undisclosed hospital for evaluation, but she was not believed to have been seriously injured.
Police said a man waiting inside the salon may have suffered minor injuries, but he was not referenced in a report issued by Trooper Joe Zandarski.
Peters' Subaru remained embedded in the building to the SUV's rear doors for much of the afternoon as police investigated.
No charges were filed on Friday.
The salon shares the one-story, white-sided building with Touch of Heaven Massage. Scissor Heaven's website and Facebook page indicate the salon opened in 1983 and has three styling stations.
Salon owner Lori Roberts could not be reached for comment, but a message was posted on the salon's Facebook page on Friday evening: 'Today we experienced an unthinkable tragedy. Please keep the families of those involved in your thoughts and prayers.'
Rev. Mark Pattock, a Capuchin friar, said Huth and another person involved in the crash are parishioners at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Winfield.
'We were actually passing by in a funeral procession and we saw the accident,' Pattock said. 'We found out later who it was.'
Once he learned what had happened, Pattock said he returned to the crash scene to offer comfort to family members and witnesses who waited behind the salon.
'I wanted to console and show God's love,' Pattock said. 'That's the most important thing right now. That's why we're here.'
Saxonburg firefighters slowed traffic along Route 356 near Laura J. Doerr Memorial Park for several hours Friday, but the highway remained open.
Shortly after noon, some police and firefighters were diverted to a second crash about 2 miles south on Route 356 in Winfield. A car had flipped onto its roof in a Myers Farm field.
No information on injuries or charges was available.
