Celebrity Hairstylist Chris McMillan on the Haircut of the Moment

Chris McMillan is the stylist behind Kim Kardashian's wedding hair, Jennifer Aniston's iconic cuts, and Miley Cyrus' game-changing pixie, to name a few. We talked to him about hair trends, his favorite hair moments, and, of course, his celebrity clientele.

Chris McMillan and Jennifer Aniston are both affiliated with the hair care brand Living Proof.

What direction do you see hair trends gravitating? I've noticed hair color going solid. The streaky highlight thing? Gone. And ombre has evolved into something that's not so dramatic. It started out where it looked like blond hair had roots. Now there's only a shade or two difference between the roots and the ends. The tonal value is the same color. Another trend: If you look at short-haired girls, they're dyeing their hair all one color. It's either all dark brown, red, or bleach blond. Bleach blond is making a big comeback, which I think is fun.

It seems like everyone is cutting her hair super short lately. What are your thoughts? There have been a lot of short-hair celebrity transformations, a lot of bobs, a lot of retro cuts sort of like Linda Evangelista. Anne Hathaway is kind of the Linda Evangelista of the moment. And then there's Michelle Williams who is kind of the Twiggy of the moment. I also love the way Jennifer Lawrence's hair is growing out. She's sporting that longer-shorter haircut, which looks really great.

How would you suggest real women try the short-hair trend? Real women absolutely should do a drastic makeover. It's always a good time. Some people are like, 'When I drop like 10 pounds I'll feel more comfortable cutting my hair short.' It doesn't matter what a guy looks like. He could be tall, short, thin, fat-whenever he gets a haircut, he always looks better. So what's the difference? It's just all about the right haircut on the right person. Know your face shape. I think everybody can pull off short hair.

What about long-haired girls who might be scared to cut off major inches? A good haircut can really make a difference. Girls with long hair, the lob is a really great haircut. A long bob. Your long hair is great. It's not going anywhere, but if you cut it into a long bob, it's going to grow out. Jessica Alba's hair looks amazing. And it's going to grow out really fast so you're not committed to it. By the time summer comes, it's back and it's much healthier. If you have a lot of layers, maybe even it up a little bit. Women are always like, 'My boyfriend likes my hair long.' But I guarantee you they're not going to break up with you because you cut your hair. If they are then you know what? F*ck 'em. You don't need to be with that guy.

Are you dying to do something drastic on a celebrity? I don't die to do something major on somebody, but I can definitely feel people out because I've been doing this a long time. I know when they're ready for a change. Miley Cyrus is the perfect example. I remember I did her for the VMAs a few years ago, and she had extensions down to her butt. She had this one extension that was an inch-and-a-half clearly longer than the rest of them. So I said, 'Let me just even this one piece up.' I basically cut half an inch, razored the rest so it still came to a V, and she lost her mind. She lost it. You'd think I cut her hair off into a bob. I cut literally one little piece. Then I did a photo shoot for a magazine with her and we had taken all the extensions out. Her hair was a lob. We scrunched it, curled it, threw it over to the side. She had some really bad hair color, so I sent my assistant down to the the grocery store, and he bought me a face frosting kit. I highlighted her hair on set, on the job, in the trailer. And that was the cover of the magazine. She loved it. So then, about three weeks later, she's like, 'I love the way you colored my hair. I want to go blonder.' So I highlighted her hair in the salon one night. Three weeks later she's like, 'Oh my God, I'm obsessed! I want to go blonder.' So I cut it a little shorter, went a little blonder. Hence, we started the conversation: 'I've always wanted a little-boy haircut. I've always wanted a little punk rock, new wave haircut. I love Agyness Deyn's hair, and I love Kate Moss when she cut her hair short.' So all of a sudden this dialogue started and there were pictures being sent back and forth and, hence, the bleaching her hair and cutting it off short. It was one of the most iconic hair transformations of this decade.

Miley's still evolving. She just loves fashion. You get bored with the way you look and you just wake up and you're like, 'I just want a new look.' Clothes are always new. Why can't we change as people too? It's the same head of hair, let's just reshape it.

Who, in your opinion, has the most iconic hair right now? Iconic hair. Besides Miley, Michelle Williams. I just think that she looks great. She portrays more of a retro, chic fashion vibe, whereas Miley has more of an edge, punk rock, the harsh side of fashion. I think what Arizona Muse and Daria did to their hair with the bobs gave it the cool-girl stamp. They took a simple haircut and made it look cool and chic. I think that really helped girls. They saw that and were like, 'I could let my hair dry naturally, throw it over to one side and make it '80s.' I think that helped girls like Jenifer Aniston, who was obsessed with Daria's hair. She was like, 'I could do that to my hair.' So we cut her hair off. Of course girls love their long hair. And they love the feeling of being able to wear it in ponytails, wear it in a bun, and pull it back into a messy little chignon. So you do end up missing that, but it's going to grow thick and healthy. You've shed damaged hair. You've also made a proactive, healthy choice for your hair. Maybe there was old color or a Brazilian blowout that you wanted to get rid of, or some layers that you didn't like that you want to even up. There's all kinds of positive things. Embrace it while you have it; it will grow faster than you think.

How do you collaborate with your celebrity clients like Jennifer Aniston? With all my clients, I'm always inspired by pictures from magazines, models, old actresses, and retro moments. Jennifer Aniston references everybody. It seems like she doesn't change her hair that much, but if you start putting pictures together, you'll see how different her styles really are. We always talk about cutting Jen's hair short, but I don't think it'll ever happen. If I could do anything, I'd get to do whatever I want to Jen's hair. And I'd do the sh*t out of it. I did her hair the other day, and she was like, 'You can never die.' She's got a good head of hair. I'm just really lucky that she came to me.
