Lightning sparks fire at hair salon

A lightning strike is blamed for sparking a fire that nearly leveled a hair salon near the Ross Barnett Reservoir.

The storm Sunday night into Monday morning produced more than 1,000 lightning bolts, the 16 WAPT Weather Team said. Firefighters told Dana Morris that lightning struck Rumors Hair Salon about 1 a.m. Monday.

'He said it came through there and hit where that desk is,' said Morris, the salon owner.

Morris is trying to figure out what to do about her business and six employees. The building was reduced to practically rubble.

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service said the mixture of heat and humidity often causes more storms that produce lightning. NWS Meteorologist Joanne Culin said it's rare for a person to be struck by lightning, but when it does happen, it's usually in the summer months.

When a thunderstorm strikes, take cover because in some cases, lightning can strike 10 miles away from a storm system, meteorologists said.

'Lightning likes to find the quickest path to the ground. A lot of times that is going to be your tallest objects at your home. Your antennae attracts the lightning,' Culin said.

That was the case Friday in the community of Elliot, just outside of Grenada. Experts said a lightning bolt struck a 400-foot tall radio tower operated by the State Forestry Commission. It took out computers, phones and other electronic equipment.
