You immerse your head in the fashion magazines yearning for yummy mocha shades of brunette, buttery soft shades of blondes ranging from butterscotch to pale wheat or a saucy and sassy auburn shades that channel Rita Hayworth. Well my friends, it all comes down to the porosity and texture of your hair. This is the most important factor in runway hair color.

I advise my clients to use a pre-treatment of hydrolyzed protein and moisture masque for maximum even saturation of the coloring product. When your hair shaft is compromised by either chemical or thermal abuse your color doesn't stand a chance. Another reason your color looks less than stellar is due to the split ends on the bottom of the hair. I know, we all want long flowing hair, but if you don't address the issue the hair will start fraying up the hair shaft. You should be trimming those ends every 4-6 weeks. I'm talking whisper trim not 4 inches off. Let's face it, if your hair is shattered by thermal abuse your colorist will have the difficult task of trying to create beautiful and believable hair color.

At the King Street Salon in Chappaqua, NY our mission is beautiful healthy looking hair. We train our clients in their aftercare 'homework.' When you partner with your colorist you'll be able to achieve predictable results. The hair care company I use is by Lanza. They have created a back bar pre-treatment to be performed before and after the hair coloring service. It's clinically tested to mend the hair up to 60% in the first treatment. That translates to less damaged sites along the hair shaft. When hair is infused with the perfect balance of strength (protein) and manageability (moisture) your hair is on the mend.

Your hair is your crowning glory; by taking these suggestions to heart you will be consistently happy with your color and colorist.
