Beauty how to: summer haircare

Yes, you need to protect your hair as well as your skin in the sun. But it's easy - we promise

Have you ever gone on holiday and arrived back with dry, brittle hair? It's not just skin that needs sun protection: UV rays can also be hugely damaging to hair. 'You need some sort of protection when you're out in the sun,' says the leading New York-based hairstylist Julien Farel. 'The heat and sun rays can cause damage to coloured hair and leave it looking lifeless.' Used weekly, his own-brand hero product, Julien Farel's Vitamin Restore (£28, selfridges.com ), cleanses and deeply nourishes the hair, and is particularly good for coloured tresses.

Once you're in the sun, apply a blob of CC Soleil Crème by Kérastase (£14.15, lookfantastic.com ), a light cream to put on wet or dry hair before sun exposure. It makes hair softer and more manageable afterwards, and also has a lovely sheen, so it's great to use as a frizz-tamer in the evenings, too. For on-the-go protection, try Boots No7's Hair Protect Spritz (£6.50, boots.com ). Spray it on before and after sun exposure and swimming in the pool to keep your colour vibrant.
