Gentle hair care

We're advised to take a gentle approach to skincare, but it's only recently that haircare products have come under scrutiny.

In the past couple of years, an increasing number of hair products boasting they are 'detergent free' have started appearing on the beauty shelves.

With shampoo, two particular detergents are commonly used: sodium lauryl sulphate and sodium laureth sulphate. Technically called surfactants, sulphates act as cleaning agents to dissolve dirt, boost foam and enable dissolved dirt and oil to remain liquid so they can be rinsed away.

With this in mind, sulphates are undoubtedly useful ingredients for shampoos. But the problem is that not only do some people find they irritate their skin, they can also over-strip hair.

'Hair is a very delicate fibre,' says hair guru Michael Gordon. 'So by not putting detergent in it, you get better results.

'It's like you have certain things you wash by hand. You wouldn't put cashmere in harsh detergent, for example, and it should be the same for hair.

'A detergent-free cleansing cream which, when in contact with hair, cleans but doesn't foam,' adds Michael, founder of top haircare brands Purely Perfect and Bumble & Bumble.

Here are some detergent-free products to try:
