Blonds are adding a subtle splash of pink to their hair

Girls just wanna have fun - and blonds are having more than ever by dyeing their pale strands pink.

Downtown fashionistas have long been buying tubes of Manic Panic hair color in a rainbow of shades, but upscale colorists like Steve Beeson at Louis Licari and Courtney Joy at Pierre Michel Salon have noticed a new, more subtle version of the fuchsia hair color.

Instead of simply dousing hair in a bucket of hot pink dye, blonds in particular have started adding pale pastels to a smaller portion of their strands.

The effect is pretty and girly - but also barely there.

'When you pass by someone, you think, 'Did she really have pale pink in her hair?'' says Beeson.

The goal is subtlety.

'The trick is the paleness,' he explains. 'Most of the colors that are pink and purple and red are so unnatural (that they stand out). So they must be muted down so it's not so obvious.'

Joy, who has some soft gray and purple color in her own hair, thinks the new trend is more in line with creativity than trend-spotting.

'It's an expression of art,' says Joy. 'It looks elegant and fun and beautiful.'

Celebrities have also been playing with rainbow tresses. Ireland Baldwin and Nicole Richie recently added some temporary purple; pop star Demi Lovato chopped off a portion of her hair, but the rest of it is pink; and model Chloe Norgaard even walked down the runways last month sporting long pink hair.

One of Joy's clients, publicist Kelly Brady, owner of Brandsway Creative, decided to get some pink added to her beachy blond strands before Fashion Week in February. Brady got the idea after accidentally spray-painting the tips of her hair pink while creating a Halloween wig last year.

'It makes your personality stand out a little bit more,' says Brady, who summoned some serious grrrl power with the bold color change. 'It showed a little bit more spunk.'

Another downtown woman said she was just looking to bring some brightness to an otherwise cold season.

'A pastel pink coat in the dead of winter is so cheery and fabulous,' says Stylecaster editor-in-chief Laurel Pinson, who wound up with girly hue in her blond hair. 'I figured pink hair would have the same effect.'

The look only works on blonds - and ladies with very light brown hair - so raven-haired beauties will have to rely on their dark charm.

Not every blond can pull it off, either, but whatever you do, however, don't try this at home; head to a professional.

'It's like a Chanel necklace,' says Joy. 'On a girl that looks cheap, even if it's real, it looks cheap.'
