Vela Scarves covers new ground by making traditional hijab headscarves with a fashionable twist

Vela Scarves co-founder Marwa Atik ties one of her webbed-edged hijabs on model Asma Wahab-Nashef. Wahab-Nashef says she likes to look at the upcoming scarves when she models so she knows ahead of time which ones she wants to purchase before they go on sale.

Vela Scarves are sold online at velascarves.com.A basic scarf costs about $20 but a more elaborate one can run up to $47.


What are hijabs?

Muslim women wear hijabs, covering their head, neck and hair, to signal modesty. But modesty and style aren't mutually exclusive for Atik.


'A person can still be very modest, and they can still respect their body while still appreciating the art of fashion,' Atik said. 'There's nothing wrong with being fashionable and being modest. We're not restricted to only wearing black.'


Marwa Atik checked on some zipper she was hoping to buy: 700 yards of it.

Atik walked deeper into the cavernous warehouse, past two-story shelves of ribbons, buttons and tassels, to the woman who stocks the shelves. She returned to Atik with a big roll of white zipper with silver teeth.
