5 Tips for Coloring Your Hair Before Your Wedding

Of all the beauty prep you'll do before your wedding, trying a new hair color can be the most exciting-and stress-inducing. Because of course the last thing you want to do is botch it, fry your hair and ruin your wedding and maybe the rest of your entire life (of course I'm exaggerating, but when you're planning a wedding, things can feel this way).

So, before you go and lighten or darken or streak your hair in advance of your big day, heed these wise tips from one of the most famous celebrity hair colorists, Rita Hazan.

1. Let your colorist know in advance what your wedding hairstyle will look like (side-parted, in an updo, etc.). That lets her place the color in a way that'll best flatter your look.

2. The best time to touch up highlights is the week of your wedding, so they're extra bright and fresh. If you won't have time to do that, apply an at-home gloss treatment as a way to amp up your color (like Hazan's Ultimate Shine Color Gloss).

3. Don't bleach your hair for the first time before your wedding. 'I would recommend waiting to make any big changes,' Hazan says. 'You don't want to take any big risks in case the color doesn't turn out how you would like it.'

4. If you want to embrace this season's big rainbow-hair trend, try incorporating just a tiny bit of color into your hairstyle. 'You can blend it with the decor of your wedding, too-if the theme is purple, add little tips of lilac or streaks just above your ear for a subtle color difference.' You can use temporary color to do this, too (try Pop Color).

5. If your hair is ombre, consider whether you'll really want your hair looking half-light/half-dark in photos. If not, you can add some highlights up top to easily make your look more timeless just in time for your walk down the aisle.
