As you may have seen, Gordon Ramsay stepped out of Victoria Beckham's birthday party earlier this week sporting a radical crop. The famous chef was wearing his fringe brushed forward over his forehead in a blunt bowl, but the real mystery was a severe, ragged undercut at the back. The tabloids instantly cried hair transplant. So is this look a result of surgery or a daring new style brought on by a mid-life crisis?
We asked leading hair transplant surgeon at Hair Restoration Blackrock, Dr Maurice Collins - a man who has successfully re-thatched James Nesbitt and Louis Walsh - to cast his expert eye over Ramsay's new hair: 'From a photo taken at night it is impossible to give a definitive answer. However, it looks like a masking agent has been applied to the area and this is consistent with someone who has recently undergone FUE [Follicular Unit Extraction] where it is normal to shave the donor area. Some people are under the impression that FUE gives better results than strip surgery, but it doesn't. FUE is great addition to hair transplant surgery but the disadvantage is the recovery time. I performed a graft of 2,500 follicles on Louis Walsh. Two days later he went on Ant and Dec and no one noticed a thing because you can't see the donor or implanted areas using strip surgery. There is no need to shave the hair, you can go straight back to work.'
Session stylist Lee Machin at Folk Barber, who has worked with Kit Harington, Jamie Dornan and Kasabian, concurs: ' Ramsay's hair is very fair so it can look a bit transparent when it's very short - even more so under the harsh flash used by the paparazzi. But he seems to have grown out the top, which may be to disguise a procedure at the front. If that is the case, better to just wear a hat or shave it all off to a grade two and let it grow back. His hair looks best worn off his face, so this isn't a good cut for him. As a short term fix he should crop the top down to two inches.'
However you can't really blame Gordon. How hard must it be to hang out with David Beckham, quite possibly the world's best looking man? Ironically, if Becks stepped out with the same look, he would probably set a new trend.
So, does Machin have any real advice for the more mature man who still wants to look relevant and is lucky to still have a full head of hair to style? 'Keep it classic and experiment with stubble at shorter lengths,' says Machin. 'Bernard Fouquet [model for JM Weston, Polo Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger] is a good example of a stylishly groomed older chap. And it goes without saying - never attempt a goatee or hair dye.'
