A new building is being built in front of Meijer on 16th Street. The building will house Jimmy John's, El Rancho Restaurant, Fantastic Sams Hair Salon.

Work is progressing on the new $1.6 million retail center at 770 E. 16th St. in Holland, and the project's developer expects the center's first tenant to be open for business within the next two or three months.

The building, located in the same complex as the Meijer superstore on East 16th Street, is being developed by Geerlings Development Co., of Zeeland. So far three businesses - Fantastic Sams Hair Salon, El Rancho Restaurant and Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches - will be leasing portions of the 8,750-square-foot building. There is still one 2,000-square-foot retail space available to lease.

'The three tenants will be moving in at various times,' Scott Geerlings, president of Geerlings Development Co., said. 'The first will be the hair salon as their (store) design is the easiest to complete.'

Geerlings said he expects the salon to move in by the end of this year or early in 2014.

'We will be meeting with the owners of the Mexican restaurant to finalize their designs soon. They will probably be moving in a month after the salon,' Geerlings said. 'The owners of Jimmy John's are planning a new store design. This will be their first store with the new look. We are waiting on a (design) layout from them.'

Midwest Construction Group of Zeeland is the general contractor on the construction project.

Repeated calls to the three business owners were not returned.

Fantastic Sams is being opened by Richard and Michelle Felker, of Grand Rapids. They also own a Fantastic Sams Salon in Sparta. The Holland location will be a full-service salon - for men and women - with nine stations for haircuts, color and styling.

The 16th Street retail center will be the second Holland location for El Rancho Restaurant. Partners Marco Cuellar, Jose Melendez and Alfredo Melendz decided, based the success of their first restaurant on Riley Street and the high traffic volume on the 16th Street corridor, the market is right for a second restaurant.

The new 143-seat restaurant will serve authentic Mexican food and have a full bar, pending license approval by the state.

The Jimmy Johns Gourmet Sandwiches on 16th Street will be the third location in the Holland-Zeeland area to be opened by MKV Management. The first local store opened by Jon Lindenbaum, CEO and president of the Muskegon-based company, was in Zeeland. The company has five other locations in the region. Based on the success of the Zeeland business, Lindenbaum recently opened a shop in downtown Holland.

The 16th Street location will have seating for 25 to 30 customers, a drive-thru window and carry out service. The store also will provide catering and delivery to nearby manufacturing companies.
