Yes, we know, you're just diving into all of the gorgeous fall/winter makeup that's suddenly at hand, but it's fun to peek into the future. Hot off a month that incorporates the rush of spring 2014 fashion weeks in New York, London, Milan and Paris, here's a look at the beauty trends you may be wearing next year.
Updos, including buns, braids and ponytails (although the latter with a futuristic edge) are still here - it makes sense to get hair off your neck as the weather heats up. Brows continue their bold showing in keeping with the slow-burn grunge revival. Exhausted by years of over-the-top nail art, many designers opted to send models down the runway with neutral nails. And a pretty surprise was the wave of golden and other shimmery metallic eyes as seen at Calvin Klein (New York), Christian Dior (Paris), Jenny Packham (New York), Jason Wu (New York) and Gucci (Milan). Below are other looks that made quite the impression.
From Darling ... Barely-There or Luminously Naked Makeup
Get your skin in tip-top shape this fall and winter because come spring, it's all about the glory of barely naked, healthy skin. Designer after designer, including Alexander Wang, Elie Tahari, Michael Kors, Narciso Rodriguez, Proenza Schouler and Thakoon (all at New York), Chloe (Paris) and Marni (Milan), sent models down the runway stripped of layers of heavy foundation, blush and other product, or at least giving the impression as such.
There was glowing, luminous skin at Christopher Kane (London), Temperley London (London) and Jean Paul Gaultier (Paris), so highlighter and luminizing makeup is still in play.
Luxe Bohemian Hair
Diane von Furstenberg (New York) showed models with softly waved hair. Models at Reem Acra (New York) showed off a mane of glorious curly, frizz. Rachel Zoe (New York) featured the beauty of textured hair pulled back into easy-does-it updos, as did Marques Almeida (London) and Todd Lynn (London) with their textured ponytails. Braids are still coveted à la the Frida Kahlo-inspired updos at Rebecca Minkoff (New York).
Beautiful hair accessories stole the beauty prize at many a show, including: flower crowns and other nature-evoking hair decorations at Anna Sui (New York), where models wore long, flowing, wavy hair; pretty, metallic hair accessories at Lela Rose (New York); flower-embellished hair at Zac Posen (New York); gold headbands at Elie Saab (Paris); and Hellenistic updos adorned with flowers, gold coins, jewels and leaves at Dolce & Gabbana (Milan).
To Darling-Dangerous ... White Nails & Eye Makeup
The white nails seen for spring 2014, some of them press-on, were sometimes darling and sometimes dangerous including the decorated, long, pointy, spiked-out-at-the-tips nails we saw at Kate Spade (New York). Cushnie et Ochs, Desigual, Kye and Nanette Lepore (all in New York) also showed white nails.
No matter the color, some nail embellishments were still there, including stripes, Swarovski crystals and nail company CND's crazy-custom, mini works of art for The Blonds (New York).
There was a good deal of white eye shadow and/or eyeliner, including at Altuzarra, Carmen Marc Valvo, Kate Spade, Rodarte and Tibi (all New York). It was applied sheer for an ethereal look or thick and opaque, like the white, graphic liner we saw at Kenzo (Paris).
Orange Lips
It seems as if the creative powers in the land of beauty are yet again holding out for women to go bold with vibrant color you could practically see in the dark - and some of the choices are quite pretty.
We saw bright lips at Jo No Fui (Milan), MSGM (Milan), John Richmond (Milan), Dsquared (London), Christian Siriano (New York), Nanette Lepore (New York) and Maria Grachvogel (London)
There were neon orange lips at Rag & Bone and fluorescent orange lips at Prabal Gurung (New York).
Brightly Colored Eyes
Among the colorful eye makeup looks, there were many of the blues we've become accustomed to these last few seasons, ranging from pastel and dreamy to bright as seen at Marc by Marc Jacobs (New York) and the aquatic blue-green eye shadow at Giorgio Armani (Milan).
There were pastel eyes at Celine (Paris), Miu Miu (Paris) and Massimo Rebecchi (Milan).
Chanel (Paris) embraced color with bold rainbow eye makeup and Givenchy (Paris) took color and adornment to the extreme with somewhat disturbing, brightly colored, bejeweled masks that covered the face.
To Dangerous Wildly Colored, And Just Plain Wild, Hair
Electric and pastel hair hues get remixed with a variety of styles. From Betsey Johnson's frothy, cotton-candy fro (New York) to blue-striped hair at Ohne Titel (New York) and green halo braids at Nicole Miller (New York), hair color is here to stay and play for at least the foreseeable future.
Rock 'n' Roll, including Edgy Bobs
Do you remember the Dorothy Hamill bowl cut? Marc Jacobs showed models wearing a choppy, edgier version of that look made with blond wigs. Celebrity hairstylist Ted Gibson did edgy, dip-dyed, reverse-ombré, bob wigs for Carmen Marc Valvo.
The cat eyeliner and graphic liner club include: Dennis Basso (New York), Haider Ackermann and Chanel (both in Paris), Just Cavalli (Milan); Missoni (Milan), Roksanda Ilincic (London) and Tracy Reese (New York).
Slick, Wet-Looking Hair
With a taste of grunge, and a lot of product, models at 3.1 Phillip Lim (New York) wore hair that looked slick and wet, as did models at Band of Outsiders, Helmut Lang, Monique Lhuillier and Yigal Azrouël (all in New York), House of Holland (London), John Galliano and Viktor & Rolf (both in Paris).
