Tips to style your hair the retro way like Amy Adams in American Hustle

The retro look doesn't seem to vanish whether it is Hollywood or Bollywood. Amy Adams who starred in American Hustle, brought the look back in trend. If you too wish to give it a try, keep these pointers in mind. The retro hairstyles have the ability to exude confidence and opulence combined with a casual edge, so do it the right way. Norris Ogario, creative director of hair salon Ogario, suggests tips to get that look.

Start with a good cut: This is the cornerstone of great styling and will make life much easier for you. Book a consultation with your hairdresser to discuss your lifestyle and hair needs. With a good cut, hair should be able to fall into place, quite effortlessly. Read trendy hair cuts for women and men in 2014.

Follow with good prep: Make it your mission to moisturise twice a week with an intensive, deeply nourishing mask. This will inject hair with hydration but also help to protect it from the effects of heat styling.

Work with your waves: If you have natural waves, work with their texture and movement. Hot rollers were popular in the seventies, but curling tongs will also work to create waves like Amy. Tongs give greater control, offer a range of heat settings and allow you to choose where to add more bounce.

To copy Amy's sexy waves: Start by spraying damp hair with a volumising spray and blow dry it out. After sectioning off your side parting, start wrapping one-inch sections of the hair around the curling irons, starting from bottom to top working your way up. Leave to set and cool before ruffling the hair out with your finger tips and finish with some texture spray to give it a more modern day feel. Also see Natalie Portman's ponytail look.

If there's a natural frizz, don't fight it. A slightly untamed, textured finish adds an element of cool. You can also create this by teasing hair at the crown and back-combing close to the roots.

Back home, Indian yesteryear actresses too created quite a stir in their time with retro hairstyles. Here are some tips to copy their style.

Mumtaz's birds' nest: Blow dry the hair with a round brush. Take hot rollers and let them cool down. Back-comb entire hair taking horizontal sections from the nape to the crown and then sides in a similar fashion. Once this is done, neatly pick up a circle or an oval from crown and pin it, this section will create a lot of height. The hairstyle is good for round and square faces, short-heighted ladies. Hair spray will be required to create the hairdo.

Dimple Kapadia's blow-out: Apply serum on damp hair, blow dry hair with medium round brush, from back and sides. Take a square section and blow dry it back. It would be great if you use rollers especially on top crown, then use a hair spray to complete the look.

Asha Parekh's bouffant: The hairstyle requires hair attachment. Leave the front panel of hair, use rest of the hair to make a high ponytail, roll all your natural hair around ponytail, fix an artificial hair attachment in order to give height. Then back comb front panel, take out a few bangs of hair to frame the face. The hairstyle requires a lot of hair spray as after every step we need to spray and fix the hair.
