5 Things You Need to Know Before Dying Your Hair Red (From Molly Sims and ...

Red hair: seems like everyone's getting into it these days. You saw Britney Spears do it last week, and Molly Sims, above, recently made the switch. The hue was even spotted on wigs at the Marc Jacobs Fall show.

Thinking about doing it? We chatted with hair color guru Aura Friedman (also known as @auracolorist on Instagram) and Nexxus Celebrity Color Expert about the trend. Here are the five things you need to know before going red.

1. Who your hair color inspiration is. 'I looked at different celebrities and different girls that were red, and I loved Amy Adams and Julianne Moore,' says Molly Sims, a recent client of Friedman's. 'I also tried on wigs in LA, and that made me feel better,' says Sims. The bottom line? 'Don't leave it up to the colorist to decide. Bring in someone's photo.' says Friedman. Also, think about perception. 'You could say copper and it means one thing, but someone else could say it and it means something else. I always tell my clients: a picture is worth a thousand words. And don't just share the picture-if there's different lighting in the photo, point to the part of the picture with the red you want.'

2. Your skin tone and eye color. 'Make sure that your colorist is looking at your skin tone and eye color in determining the right shade of red. I can't even tell you how many people I've taught in the past who don't really know much about it and makeup artist principles in general.' says Friedman. 'There are so many variables, so it's best that a colorist takes a look at you and tells you what's going to work.'

3. Your makeup is going to change. 'Right when Aura did my hair, we had to re-do my makeup.' says Sims. 'We chose bronzy, more golden makeup that warms up my skin. I'm also so ready to rock a red lip. I love a red lip on a redhead!' says Sims.

4. Color-protecting products will make or break you. 'I think the biggest worry for women who color their hair is fading. And for someone like me, who wants to maintain my color when my colorist is not right next to me, products are so important.' says Sims. Expert tip: Try a product line that's sulfate-free but also has oil ingredients. We like the new color line from Nexxus called Color Assure.

5. It's going to be high maintenance. 'The problem with red is that it fades, and sometimes when it does, it's not the most flattering. So, try not to wash too often, use a glossing treatment, and color every 4-6 weeks. It's a lot of maintenance, but so worth it.' says Friedman.
