Fashion: Natural hair is back in

Sizzling Entertainment

Growing up, young African girls look forward to the day they will get rid of their coarse, sisal, curly hair by using chemicals to perm and straighten it into a long, flowing Rapunzel or Barbie locks.

After all, many African girls spend their childhood combing the blond hair of a blue-eyed doll and idolizing its 'perfect' look.

The first time we add chemical to our hair almost always leaves burns and scars on the scalp.

But this does not stop us from going back for more, all in the hope of achieving the straight Caucasian hair.

We then go ahead and buy the Caucasian hair extensions which we stitch or glue to our heads to create an illusion of long, luscious hair.

But there is a growing legion of girls and women saying no to the chemical pain and proudly embracing the kinky African hair.

They have stopped fixing what is not broken and are quietly creating a natural hair renaissance that has spread to the internet, where support groups have been created to give advice on how to maintain natural hair.

Natural hair can be worn in a short cut, or what we call the Janet cut in Uganda. You can have it in an afro, afro puff, dreadlocks, rugged kinky style or hot combed.

You can play with it any way you like but if you choose to have the rugged kinky style, a bright face is a must, to give the look character. If you just leave it rugged without ensuring that your face, jewellery and outfit stand out, you come off as a woman who does not own a comb.

So, work that make-up sister. If you still want to keep a natural face as well, make sure your face is clear of pimples and blemishes; work the attitude.

Attitude is everything in this natural world because you are going to be getting so many questions like, 'Why do you torture yourself with this kinky unmaintainable natural hair?' 'Don't you have money to go to the salon?' 'You are sure you don't want to wear a wig over that?'

Attitude will keep away the naysayers. In the end, they might even consider to join your legion. So say bye bye to costly painful salon visits, say hello to the natural hair. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
