Why stress is the root of hair problems (Includes interview and first

Dar Es Salaam - A little care at the right moment could keep the hair on a lot of heads, and that goes for women too, according to Andrew Bernard.

'There's one thing about baldness, it's neat. Those were the days when baldness was seen as an incurable male problem, in spite of a host of quack potions,' Mr. Bernard said today in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Mr. Bernard, a hairdresser, is also Tanzania's only fully trained member of the Scotland-based Institute of Trichologists. A trichologist is a hair and scalp specialist. Mr. Bernard says more and more women are now losing their hair because of nervous tension.

'A woman is really in a worse position than a man, when she has accepted both the tensions of the home and the tensions of a job.' Mr. Bernard says 65 per cent of hair loss in Tanzanians could be prevented if they took proper care when they were teenagers.

He says the Tanzania's Education Department should promote hair care just as it teaches dental hygiene. This would be most valuable in secondary schools. Many hair problems start with over-active sebaceous glands at puberty.

Follicles become blocked by debris, which inhibits hair growth.'Some fairly simple hair preparation containing argan oil would keep the hair follicles open,' he says.

Mr. Bernard says hair loss which starts during the teens does not become apparent until the early 20s. 'You lose 4 per cent of your hair before you realize you are losing it.'

Most people lose 30 to 40 hairs a day, but this is normal and consistent with the rate of replacement.

Mr. Bernard says many of his clients have developed excessively active oil glands because of the stresses and strains of their life styles. This condition tends to appear in alert, quick-moving people who live on nervous energy. Hereditary male baldness cannot be helped, but most other conditions respond to the right treatment, he says.

This might include high frequency massage, medications - containing herbs, vitamins and alcohol, ultra-violet, use of argan oil and steam treatment. Mr. Bernard says a good diet, with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and protein, is important for healthy hair.

'Apart from getting tangles out, hair brushing is a vastly over-rated exercise.' And women who drag their hair back into tight buns and ponytails are 'mad'. 'That alone can cause loss of hair. It impairs the ability of the hair to reproduce,' said Mr. Bernard
