Is life better with a beard? For 25-year-old Joel Alexander, life is f'ing great with a beard. 'Early on, a scout director said to me, 'grow your beard out and come see me in three weeks.' I ended up not being able to see him for three months but I kept the beard growing, and when I finally saw him he said, 'well, this isn't what I envisioned, but let's try it.'' Alexander's burly facial fur (among various other genetic gifts) has since landed him a contract with IMG Models and work among some of the world's best brands. (There's only one downside to the bristle: 'I guess I don't enjoy kissing as much as I used to,' he says.)
As any man with a Jesus beard should, Alexander starts each morning with a devotional--'it makes a drastic, positive difference on my day and keeps me focused'--and follows it with a heavy hit of caffeine. 'My New York roommate was a barista so he makes great coffee for us,' he says. Then it's either a basketball match or cardio with weights at the gym, and a speedy grooming session before heading out the door to hit his call time. (Alexander prefers to style his hair himself but leaves the heavy taming and trimming of the beard to the pros.) Here's what happens in his bathroom:
The Hair: 'I use Hanz de Fuko Natural Shampoo to wash my hair and body; I even lather up my beard with it. Daniel Alfonso is my hair guy on the East Coast and we have plans for a man bun so I'm growing it out for a bit, but I usually get the sides trimmed every three weeks or so. I style it with some Claymation and a little bit of Sponge Wax.'
The Beard: 'I have a drawer full of beard oils that companies send me but I love the The Bearded Bastard Woodsman Oil. It's handmade in Austin, Texas and keeps my face from getting itchy. I've found a brush works better than a comb for my beard; a comb just teases it out. And I can't trim it myself--tried it once, didn't work out well.'
The Face: 'I'm lucky, I've never had any skin problems or breakouts. I actually don't wash my face or use any moisturizer or anything.'
The Body: 'I've been using Speed Stick but every time I find one I like they stop making it, clearly I have bad taste in deodorant. I should probably find a natural one without aluminum, all that crap isn't good for you.'
The Fragrance: 'I brought my mom with me to pick out a fragrance and we got Viktor & and Rolf's Spicebomb. I'm getting pretty good reviews on it so far.' Â
