We get it. The term 'hair gel' evokes all kinds of nostalgic confusion. Kate Moss' Calvin Klein cowlick; that (satisfying, cathartic) sensation you used to get when picking apart crusty, crystallized clumps of hair between HSC exams; Mel C channeling Nick Carter in the mid-90s... Sorry, where were we? Hair gel. Right.
The formerly out-of-vogue substance is enjoying a renaissance thanks to fashion's tendency towards 'the wet look'. Reem Acra, Bottega Veneta and Jeremy Scott all played with the stuff on the international runways in February, and on the local catwalks last week By Johnny opted for moist rockabilly 'dos while Jayson Brundson went for long, dripping hair-combs to complement his collection.

If you're not sure how to slap a spot of the stuff on, here are four easy styles that'll compel you to re-inject gel back into your beauty arsenal. We've tried, and honestly? It's fun.

The slicked-back ponytail
No time to blow dry your hair before work? No problem. Wash your hair and apply gel to your mane's top. Then, simply comb back into a low pony. It'll keep all day for the price of exactly two minutes.
The dramatic center part
However your hair usually falls, brush into a precise center part. Apply gel from your scalp's midpoint downwards and leave your tips to do their own thing.
The side-swept low bun
Create a severe side-part and pat down with-yep, you guessed it!-gel. Tie your remaining locks into a low bun, and, if you're feeling starved for inspiration, refer to Kim Kardashian's instagram feed. (The red carpet pics immediately after her Thailand jaunt, if we're getting specific...)
The detangled bob (or lob...)
Straight, short and ultimate strand separation with the help of some dense hair crème. Never could we have imagined Lisa Kudrow at the '98 Emmys would one day turn vintage and iconic, but hey-we did just buy Birkenstocks in four different colours.
