Worcester's Green Hair Co. Salon + Spa Makes Beauty Organic

A new Worcester business is making waves in the environmental awareness community and growing eco-movement. What's more-they would be more than happy to do your hair. Green Hair, the newest business on Chandler Street, promotes a whole new philosophy of beauty.

It is impossible not to recognize that America has a new generation of business people on its hands: generation green. Green Hair Company is owned by two strong businesswomen, a mother/daughter power duo, who make the green business model their way of life. Mimi McGlone opened the first of two Green Hair Company salons in Fiskdale, a village of Sturbridge, in 2009. Her daughter, Brittany McGlone, now runs the Worcester salon.

A new model for salon services

This salon is different than any other in the city. 'Our salon is different from other salons because it is free of harmful chemicals, dyes, perfumes, etc.,' said Brittany McGlone, co-owner of Green Hair Company and manager of the Chandler Street location. 'When you walk in you won't get smacked in the face with a terrible smell! All of our products are either organic, or contain organic ingredients. We strive to always have the best, healthiest products available. We do recycling programs with our shampoo bottles, and all of our products are vegan!'

Her mother agrees, but points out that there still exist misconceptions about organic products.

'Most people are not aware that 65% of what we put on our skin gets absorbed into it,' said Mimi Mcglone, founder of Green Hair and operator of the Fiskdale location. 'It's nice to control what we can when we can! Most people also assume that our products are not as effective or our services are too expensive since we use organic color. Both are not true. Our company strives to be as green as possible and to give back to the community whenever we can.'

More green businesses in Worcester

Green Hair is the newest addition to the city's green business community. It joins the ranks of other successful eco-friendly businesses in Worcester such as Evo Dining, and The Living Earth Food Store -but has become the first eco-friendly salon concept in Worcester.

They do much more than support an eco-friendly mission. They also are great at what they do. Green Hair offers hair services, waxing, manicures, pedicures, makeup, and more in the salon locations; also making themselves available to cater to weddings.

'Our mission is to make people feel beautiful inside and out,' said Brittany. 'We want everyone to leave here feeling 'pretty' but also have a sense of pride knowing they didn't cause any chemicals to get washed down the drain, and that they only supported good companies.'

She added that Green Hair isn't your average 'high heel' salon. 'We are very casual, so people tend to feel right at home in our salons,' she said.

Organic hair and beauty products, like the ones used at the salon, are better for hair than traditional products that use parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate, and other chemicals than can be damaging to the hair and scalp. Their hair color is also GMO free.
